What Is the Taco Index?
The Taco Index is an alternative financial metric that uses Trump's public statements as a leading indicator to track subsequent movements in US stock indices like NASDAQ and S&P 500.
The concept came from a news article. After reading it, I searched around — no financial institution was actually publishing this data publicly. So I built it myself.
Built with Claude Code
Since I started using Claude Code, the real challenge has shifted from implementation to ideation. I described what I wanted, and Claude Code delivered something even more accurate than I had imagined.
The result is live at taco.poorman.org.
Why "Taco"?
It's a playful acronym combining Trump + market indices, with a nod to the broader "Poorman Indices" theme of the platform. The idea of quantifying a public figure's statements as a market signal isn't new, but AI makes it genuinely practical now — no manual data wrangling required.
What's Next
I plan to add more tongue-in-cheek indices to the same platform over time. If you have ideas for unusual or humorous financial correlations worth tracking, drop a comment on the blog.
